Beyond the Reach
The Emeriti believe that scholarly historical study of the Emperor’s rule is the key to living as He did. They devote their days to compiling and dissecting texts of all kinds about the Emperor. It is rumored that their research has uncovered a hidden truth about the Emperor, and they’ve been ordered to keep it secret on pain of death.
Sections of the city dominated by Emeriti influence contain an inordinate number of libraries and bookstores, not to mention cafés and artsy establishments. The Emeriti see all doctrinal arguments as fundamentally flawed without some supporting text, and are prone to almost heretical musings as they debate the merits of one text over another.
Surprisingly, the cosmopolitan Emeriti are the religious faction most in touch with the homesteaders. Most Emeriti clergymen maintain a “country home,” dedicating several months out of the year to working a farm. As a result, the Emeriti are the least troubled of all the factions by the food shortages.
