Beyond the Reach
The Gold Drinkers are perhaps the simplest of Monsantine’s four cults; their claim to fame is their initiation ritual, in which new converts melt down all of their golden possessions, mix in some water, and drink. The water is usually insufficient to cool the gold to a safe level, so Gold Drinkers are universally known by their scarred faces and rasping voices. Their practices are rooted in the belief that pain makes them one with the Emperor, and that the gold literally transforms into a piece of the Golden Throne in their mouths.
Because they see the Golden Throne as a physical manifestation of the Omnissiah’s service to the Emperor, they are the only one of the four cults willing to acknowledge that the Omnissiah is a divinity in its own right, and therefore enjoy a privileged relationship with the Mechanicus on Monsantine.
The Gold Drinkers’ predilection for pain extends to all parts of their life; the groups of penitent flagellants that wind their way through Ingenuity daily are composed almost entirely of Gold Drinkers.
